<p>I co-wrote this target heart rate article with Craig Ballantyne because we want to get the message out to everyone who keeps struggling with this outdated mentality that they must be in some sort of &#8220;fat burning <b>zone</b>&#8221; if they want to stand any chance of losing body fat with their workouts. We&#8217;ll show you why targeting a specific heart rate to be in this so-called fat burning <b>zone</b> is actually the opposite of what you should be focusing on in your workouts if you truly want to get lasting fat loss results.</p>

<p>One of the worst myths in the fitness industry is that you need to maintain a specific heart rate range in the fat burning <b>zone</b> in order to lose fat. But this is simply not true. Unfortunately, this false belief leads people to choose low intensity steady state cardio routines that are ineffective and cause most people a major lack of results from their workouts.</p>
<h2>The Zone Diet</h2>
<p>The quicker you get rid of the &#8220;target fat burning heart rate = the best workout&#8221; mentality, the faster you will actually start to get real results with fat loss and changing the shape of your body for good.</p>
<p>In the Turbulence Training workouts, you actually burn more fat and more total calories when you are OUT of the gym due to the high-intensity and variable intensity nature of the training methods in these programs. This phenomenon is not due to the elevated heart rate you experience during the workout (even though your heart rate will be increased from the supersets and intervals), but rather from the metabolic and hormonal response you achieve from the more effective workout compared to your ineffective &#8220;fat burning <b>zone</b>&#8221; workout.</p>
<p>Over the last 10 years, scientific research has indicated a couple of very important things to us about exercising for body fat loss. First of all, lifting heavier weights while exercising leads to a higher caloric consumption by the body in the period for about 1-2 days following the workout when compared to lifting light weights with high repetitions. So that&#8217;s why 6-8 repetitions per set is better than 12-15 reps per set when it comes to stimulating the metabolism for losing fat permanently. That&#8217;s one of the cornerstones of the types of training routines in programs that actually get results, like Turbulence Training.</p>
<p>Another important aspect we have learned from scientific research in recent years is that highly variable interval-type training is far superior to slow, steady-pace cardio exercise for fat loss and post-exercise induced calorie burning. In the long run, if you focus on the internal metabolic response your body is getting from your workout routines, instead of how many calories you burn during some sort of magical &#8220;target fat burning heart rate <b>zone</b>&#8220;, you will achieve MUCH better fat loss results. So not only is it more result-producing, but it is also more time-efficient to use short high-intensity interval training workouts instead of slow, long, steady-pace cardio sessions.</p>
<p>The only time you might need to know your specific heart rate is during the recovery period of the interval training. It is important to take enough time during your recovery intervals in order for your heart rate to drop back down significantly (allow it drop to approximately less than 60% of your max heart rate).</p>
<p>That way you are able to get more quality work done when it counts. You do not want to start your next high-intensity interval too soon, nor do you want to exercise too hard during your recovery intervals.</p>
<p>All of these details are provided in the interval training guidelines within the Turbulence Training program. And we&#8217;ll show you how to properly structure your intervals so that you allow enough recovery time between each. With these guidelines, you do not have to worry about monitoring your target heart rate or anything fancy like that. It&#8217;s just not necessary. Just follow the TT instructions, and you will do great.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s the bottom line:</p>
<p>If you want to start actually getting the fat loss results you&#8217;ve been wanting for so long, do not worry so much about your target fat buring heart rate <b>zone</b> during exercise. Instead, make sure that you are working at a high-intensity and a variable intensity (according to your individual capabilities of course) during each weight lifting and interval training session.</p>
<p>The TT workout guidelines will give you all of the details you need on the specific rest periods to use between supersets and intervals. With these guidelines, you will start to see vastly improved results from your workouts within weeks of implementing the changes.</p>

<p>13.	Drinks like coffee, tea, mineral water, and spirits.</p>
<p>A few precautions</p>

<p>The history of no carbohydrate diet goes back to Vilhjalmur Stefansson who was a Canadian explorer. He lived, for some time, with a hunting tribe known as Inuit and during his short stay he noticed that these people only consumed Meat and fish for daily survival and their diet consisted of very few carbohydrates in the form of berries during the summer season. This led Stefansson to believe that humans can indeed exist on animal meat or in other words no carbohydrate diet.</p>

<p>Later in his life Stefansson and one of his friend can forward for a one year experiment at Bellevue Hospital in New York so as to prove that a human being can indeed survive on a completely carb free diet. The duration of this experiment was set to be a year during which Stefansson and his friend ate nothing but meat, meat fat and internal organs of animals. This experiment was done under strict supervision of hospital authorities and their progress was closely monitored. Surprisingly, Stefansson and his friend were found to be in near- perfect condition after an year and they did not developed any diseases such as scurvy which experts of the time believed, will develop within a span of few months due to lack of Vitamin-C in meat based foods.</p>

<p>It is noteworthy to mention here that Stefansson and his friend have lived among Inuit people for many years and hence many experts speculated that their bodies may have become &#8220;conditioned&#8221; to a meat- based diet. <p>Jenny Craig, is it good for you or bad for you? My wife has recently restarted going to Jenny Craig and because of the popularity of Jenny Craig I thought I would write a bit of an article about Jenny Craig.</p>

<p>Jenny Craig is a <b>diet</b> that you do by going into an office and getting the full meal deal, and you pay for that. The program that Jenny Craig offers for <b>weight loss</b> is to have your consultant ask some questions and then put you on a specific calorie plan. In my wife&#8217;s case she started with 1500 calories a day as a food intake. The next step after the food amount is chosen is to have a weekly menu that you can take home and put on your fridge. The food on the menu is mostly taken from food that you but at Jenny Craig. Ah, you say now I get it there must be a cost to this. The big key for most people is the fact that there is one on one consulting once a week when you weigh in and buy your food.</p>
<h2>The Zone Diet</h2>

<p>This is the part of the Jenny Craig <b>diet</b> that I was most interested in. After looking at the <b>diet</b> I think that I have a good feel for what the <b>diet</b> stresses. First Protein, carbohydrate, fats. In looking at the food over the week I am pretty happy with the food combination, Jenny Craig <b>diet</b> is higher in protein and lower in fats and carbohydrates and low in fat as is very popular these days. I am guessing that the protein, carbohydrate, fat percentages are around 30-60-10 which is nice but a little bit of a shock for most people. The food is pretty good for vegetables which of course are low in calories but high in water and nutrients. The meal plan with Jenny Craig calls for eating five or six times a day which is great but the numerous small meals are a very hard adjustment for my wife&#8230;.she is OK now though. The food itself look delicious and apparently tastes quite good although there are a few food that my wife is not a big fan of at all, I can tell this by the stars beside some <b>foods</b> and then a big YUCK beside a star on the bottom of the menu.</p>
<p>Jenny Craig Costs</p>
<p>There is definitely a cost to Jenny Craig and this is definitely a drawback to the program. There are various plans you can be setup with including an initial  for six weeks but this is not the biggest cost for the <b>diet</b>. Jenny Craig is one of the few diets that offer its own complete menu and you are expected to get your whole week food there all at one time. I know the argument to this is that you have to buy food anyways but at least you are not buying something that you do not need but the food is a little pricy. My wife says that the food cost is around 125 dollars a week.</p>

<p>There is a lot of support with Jenny Craig which is great for most people that are trying to lose weight. There is the one on one consultation every week but there is also a very lively private discussion board that is hosted by Jenny Craig and I believe that this is a very good advantage to anyone with an internet connection and a bit of weakness occasionally.</p>

<p>When my wife decided that she was going to go back to Jenny Craig I was a little apprehensive, she has done this before and it did not meet her expectations five years ago. <p>The child with ADHD will be a poor learner, be impulsive and very reactive; they are also prone to aggression, being uncontrollable and inattentive to others.</p>
<h2>The Zone Diet</h2>
<p>Although treatment with Ritalin and / or anti-hypertensives taken orally, the effect on children under six is usually too risky by way of an adverse reaction to be routinely administered. Indeed, for those children that can take the drugs, there can be up to one fifth of those who do not respond (or have a bad reaction) to the drug which is counterproductive.</p>
<p>There are homeopathic ways of combatting the overactive and ADHD affected child. In a 1997 UK study, a set of children with ADHD were given a homeopathic remedy and compared with another set which were given a placebo. Over a period of ten days, a positive correlation was seen by the parents or carers who had the homeopathic medicine applied.</p>
<p>Even after the conclusion of the trial, of those who had been on the homeopathic treatment some 57% of the cohort continued to improve after the end of the test, and after the end of the homeopathc medicines. A further quarter had relapsed after stopping receiving the treatment and a further fifth did continue to have good results but by continuing the use of homeopathic medicine treatments.</p>
<p>Of the medicines available, the best ones found were seen to be Hyoscyamus niger (most effective for older children with manic or sexual related symptoms), Cina (for those with aggressive challenging behavior) and Stramonium (for those with irrational fears, or following some stressful trauma episode).</p>
<p>Other potential homeopathic medicines for ADHD might include Lycopodium (for those who act cocky and boastful, yet with a lack of confidence when out of a comfort zone), Tuberculinum (for those who always look for, desire and seek change but are continually dissatisfied) and Chamomilla (for those who have a temper problem, are angry and irritable yet always fidgety, wanting attention and continually hyperactive to the point of exhaustion. The problems may be worse at night, too).</p>
<p>Homeopathic remedies are avialable and have some positive history for treatment of hyperactivity and ADHD. The very real issue of treatment can be assisted by sensible diet choices which may exacerbate natural energy such as soft drinks, refined sugar, processed foods and fried food. Applied with sensible and considered natural medicines can and has shown to be wholly effective in treatment of ADHD.</p>
<p>Many different medicines are available for a variety of symptoms as described above, but it is by no means a closed story when seeking a treatment that works that conventional medicines such as Ritalin will be the only answer. The homeopathic choices are wide and of considerable scope, and should be considered given all of the local circumstances of the ADHD individual.</p>

<p>An okay choice: Elliptical Machines.</p>
<h2>The Zone Diet</h2>
<p>The biggest reason to choose elliptical machines &#8211; you&#8217;ve got a bum knee. I have worked with clients with extreme osteoarthritis and we were able to use these for a decent workout without pain.</p>
<p>But other than that, I am hardly impressed by the elliptical machine for fat loss. If you go into any gym, compare the bodies on the ellipticals to the ones on other machines&#8230;most of the time, the people on the ellipticals make no progress from month to month. Sorry, I just don&#8217;t like these.</p>
<p>But if you have bad knees, or if you are an exception to my experience, feel free to keep rocking the elliptical!</p>
<p>Up next&#8230;The Stationary Bike</p>
<p>The bike can be easy on your knees as well, particularly if you are overweight and can&#8217;t support your bodyweight at this time.</p>
<p>But personally, I like the stationary bikes a lot. The set up allows you to do a large amount of mechanical work during your interval training &#8211; and that is what puts Turbulence on the muscle and allows you to increase your post-exercise metabolism. In fact, when I first started designing the interval workouts back in 2001, I used stationary bikes exclusively.</p>
<p>I also think that the bike allows you to work very hard with less risk of injury. Sprinting requires an extensive warm-up due to the explosive nature of the activity.</p>
<p>I recommend starting with the bike unless you are an experienced runner that knows your body well</p>
<p>In addition, here are three more key points about the bike.</p>
<p>a) Stick to the upright version if possible. When using a recumbent bike for intervals, your hips tend to rock too much and your body tries to get into awkward positions in order to push hard against the resistance. That&#8217;s my experience. The upright bikes are set up better for intervals.</p>
<p>b) For intervals, increase the resistance against your pedalling, and not the speed of your pedalling. I don&#8217;t like high RPM spinning. I think you&#8217;ll get more results and do more work when you keep the RPM between 80-100 and work against a harder resistance. Forget that high-RPM spinning stuff&#8230;I think it is rough on your hips and knees.</p>
<p>c) When on the upright bike, sit as upright as possible for the recovery intervals or even stand for some of the work intervals. Just avoid a rounded over posture as that can be hard on your low back.</p>
<p>And the winner is&#8230;The Treadmill.</p>
<p>The treadmill can burn almost 20 calories per minute of exercise during your workout. That&#8217;s a big burn, but of course only advanced fitness levels can achieve that &#8211; but hopefully you fit that category now or you will someday with consistent training and nutrition.</p>
<p>Some tips: Don&#8217;t go crazy on using an incline (as that can lead to tight calves), but if you are able to run at more than 10mph, use a 1% incline to help offset the need for more speed. The last thing you want to do is end up in a crazy video on YouTube with you flying off the end of a treadmill into an elliptical machine.</p>
<p>So as with all types of sprinting, be careful.</p>
<p>Honorable mentions go to&#8230;The Rowing Machine and Stairmaster&#8230;these can be used in place of other machines for variety and are still effective. Better yet, if you are able, use your body as the best fat burning machine. I highly recommend bodyweight circuits for interval training. These are fun, effective, and perhaps even better at sculpting your body.</p>
